Since 1940, the Big Flats Plant Materials Center has selected plants and provided new vegetative conservation solutions for the Northeast region. The Center has developed new technology for improving forage, buffer strips, cover crops, living snow fences and windbreaks, and assisting the National Park Service with disturbed areas. The Center is actively working alongside Cornell researchers in field trials of warm and cool season perennial grasses for feedstock use. The NRCS has collected native grass seed from a wide geographic area for researchers to grow and study to identify varieties that will exel under New York conditions.
