Weeds

Weeds are a critical barrier to the establishment of perennial grasses during the first year.  Research is currently being conducted to identify herbicides and mechanical methods that can be used in New York State on bioenergy feedstocks.  Proper weed management is essential to successful feedstock production, especially during the first yeaf of production.

 Recommendations include:

  •  Proper seedbed preparation - apply Round-Up (glyphosate) in the fall before planting and again in the spring to ensure a clean seedbed
  • Cut first year stands in July at 10 inches to allow smaller warm season grasses to obtain light
  • Do NOT apply fertilizer in the first year - this will make the weeds grow
  • Apply a boadleaf herbicide, if they are a problem

Below are listed the most common broadleaf and grass weeds in New York State.
