General Information on the Research and Production of Bioenergy Feedstocks
CALS Bioenergy Feedstock Project > General Information

Welcome to the general information resources section of this web site. The following pages should help you gain an understanding of the production of bioenergy in New York State. Please contact us for additional resources that you need or would find useful

In the Biomass section, we will look at the various types of material being used to create energy. This includes forestry products, bioenergy crops, municipal solid waste and industrial waste.

There are a number of different technologies being used to convert biomass into energy. These Conversion Technologies will be explained and examples given for you to explore.

Often we hear controversy around the subject of bioenergy and renewable fuels. We will supply you with the latest energy statistics to help you understand what is being discussed and the potential benefits of bioenergy production.

One of the major foci of biofeedstock production is the Environmental Benefits of creating alternative energy. Switchgrass and willow provide shelter for wildlife and prevent soil erosion near streams and rivers. Biofuels have the added benefit of providing a "carbon sink." As crops grow to produce the feedstocks for making the biofuel, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Terminology can be confusing. We have supplied you with the latest government's definition of bioenergy and renewable fuel terms.
